New Year, New Goals

It can be difficult to set aside time for planning and scheduling amid all the challenges and duties within the childcare setting. This time of year, almost everyone can stand to do some organizing in some area of their lives. Whether that includes a major New Year's resolution, or smaller goals like organizing your desk drawer, keeping a tidier classroom or getting some additional training, now is a great time to help make your life easier and less stressful. The process of planning and setting new goals provides an important opportunity to reflect on where you are, and where you want to be. Effective planning and time management skills will help you leave work at the end of the day on time, in control, and satisfied with a job well done!

A key component of any successful childcare provider (or business person) is time management. Effective time management is all about understanding what you need to accomplish in order to succeed. Once you reach that understanding, you can organize the details of your life and get control of your to-do list. It's all about "planning the work and working the plan." Good time management allows you to organize daily, weekly, and monthly tasks in a way that puts you in control of your to-do list. Without planning and time management, you probably won't enjoy your job or find much satisfaction in it. These steps are crucial for providing high-quality care as well as achieving a successful work-life balance.

Childcare professionals are in a unique position to have a direct impact on young children. You can see your work in action, and experience firsthand your goals coming to fruition. Only you can set goals for yourself, and only you can decide what each of those goals mean to you. A typical child care professional must fulfill a number of responsibilities in a variety of areas, and the to-do list is never-ending. It's important to prioritize those responsibilities, and have a plan on how to approach those responsibilities. In the child care setting, those priorities could include preparing for a licensing visit, reviewing a new curriculum, doing an employee review, or conducting parent conferences. Whatever the responsibility might be, proper planning and time management can help you get it right.

Another key component in planning for the new year is communication. Communication with the children in your care, parents, fellow childcare providers, and your superiors is imperative to helping you accomplish all of your goals, and becoming the best version of yourself. The quality of a relationship between two people is highly dependent on the quality of their communication. Developing effective communication skills is especially important in a child care environment, where young people are watching and learning from your every move. The better your communication skills are, the better your relationships will be in your professional life, and the better early child care provider you will become.

Planning and setting goals for yourself can seem tedious. However, the process of setting these goals provides an important opportunity to reflect on where you want to be as a childcare professional. Learning to set new goals and properly manage your time shouldn't be painful. It may take a little extra effort to get it right at first, but eventually it will help you do your job better, and make your whole life more enjoyable.

Maura Hanly
New Hope, PA

Congratulations to Maura for successfully completing the CCEI Infant-Toddler Certificate Program of Study!

Maura began her career in early childhood by helping take care of her many cousins, and began attending technical school during her last two years of high school to gain additional childcare knowledge. She loves playing and talking to the infants in her care, and enjoys the one-on-one time while feeding them their bottles. The children in Maura's care enjoy their time most when the caregivers are smiling, singing, and laughing with the infants on a regular basis.

Maura is motivated by interacting with babies who depend on her to meet their nurturing needs.
In her spare time, Maura enjoys spending time with her niece and nephew, and cheering them on as they compete in various sporting events. In the future, she plans to continue working with babies, and helping them begin their developmental journey through life. Mauara recommends CCEI to everyone and says, "I have found the CCEI program to be very thorough and comprehensive.  I was very pleased with my Student Services Manager.  She answered all my questions and concerns very quickly and she was most encouraging."

Congratulations, Maura! CCEI is proud to call you a graduate!
