June 2024 Newsletter – Outdoor Explorations – The Importance of Outdoor Explorations

The Importance of Outdoor Explorations

In our preschool settings, our children’s interactions with the outdoors are usually limited to time spent on the playground. This outdoor playground time is extremely beneficial to students and is a greatly needed part of any preschool day. However, our preschoolers can gather a vast array of  benefits from added additional learning and exploration in outdoor settings. Whether it is right in our  playground areas or a neighboring park, exposure to nature and learning in these settings have a profound effect on children. Benefits to physical and mental health, cognitive and emotional  development, and even awareness and understanding of our natural world can occur during times of outdoor explorations.

Both structured learning and free explorations in the outdoors should be a part of daily routines for our preschoolers. Tapping into the benefits that come with outdoor learning will help our children’s development and enhance their experience in our classrooms and preschools. As Early Childhood Educators it is our responsibility to provide the opportunities for these meaningful outdoor experiences. We must set a well thought out outdoor environment and plan the lessons to get the best use out of the outdoor spaces available to our children. Providing a good outdoor environment will keep our preschoolers engaged and learning, and reaping the development benefits that outdoor learning provides.

In an ever increasing digital world, preschoolers are spending less time in nature and in the outdoors in general, than ever before. This type of sedentary lifestyle and constant link to digital screens has caused a rise in issues such as obesity and ADHD among many others in young children. Reconnecting our students to the natural world, through outdoor explorations and other outdoor learning and play is crucial to the healthy development of young children.

Many activities and lessons can be planned along with free play for our students in our outdoor spaces. Other places near our schools can also be used. Parks or nature centers can be great learning opportunities. Even if we are not able to go to a park or a neighboring nature center, using the space we have, consistently and creatively will provide the outdoor learning environment that our students need. There are many resources for ideas of creative activities and lessons that incorporate nature and natural environments that we can use to get our children back to the outdoors.

June 2024 Newsletter – Outdoor Explorations: Tips for Creating Meaningful Outdoor Experiences for Preschoolers

Tips for Creating Meaningful Outdoor Experiences for Preschoolers

As we have seen there are numerous benefits to outdoor learning. Outdoor explorations and learning with preschoolers is a valuable way to support their physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Providing meaningful outdoor experiences for our students can be challenging. Time, weather and space constraints can be overcome to provide a valuable learning experience to our children in the outdoors. What are ways that we can provide these meaningful experiences for our class?

As with most things and lessons we want to teach our preschoolers consistency is key. Make it a regular part of the routine. Incorporate outdoor time into the daily routine so that children come to expect and look forward to it. This could be a daily nature walk, outdoor playtime, or even an outdoor snack time. Letting the children lead the way during outdoor explorations will raise their level of interest. Follow their interests and encourage them to ask questions and make observations. Encouraging hands on activities and providing opportunities for children to touch, smell, and interact with nature can provide meaningful experiences. Sensory bins, gardening, and nature art projects are great ways to provide these opportunities. Outdoor explorations can easily incorporate math and science lessons and many other parts of the curriculum. Educators can have children count the flowers during a nature walk, or discuss how clouds are formed while looking at the sky. These experiences will help children recall the information of the lesson given and helps keep them engaged during learning. It is important to remember that children need time to explore and discover on their own. Providing unstructured play time in a natural setting is important during outdoor explorations. As with everything we do with our preschooler preparation and safety are critical to our outdoor lessons. Having a well thought out lesson plan and ensuring the children are appropriately prepared for the weather, having water available, are keys to providing a meaningful experience. Safety is the top priority when working with preschoolers, so with any outdoor exploration, emphasize safety. Make sure children understand the rules and boundaries for outdoor play before hand and always supervise them closely.

Nature explorations and outdoor learning can incorporate every aspect of the curriculum. Providing well thought out lessons in a natural setting in science, math, art, writing, can be achieved and highly effective outdoors. There are many activities that our preschoolers will love that will touch on numerous parts of our curriculum. Early childhood educators can for example provide nature scavenger hunts, nature art, gardening, sensory bin play, and a vast array of games. Use of our outdoor settings and spaces creatively and purposefully, following and encouraging our student’s interests will be of tremendous value to all. There is a myriad of activities and lessons that can be done to enhance our children’s education, and a great number of resources with activities are always available.

Maximizing the Learning Potential of Your Outdoor Space

The benefits of outdoor learning for young children has been widely researched and documented. The use of our outdoor spaces for more than just physical play is crucial to our preschooler’s development. What do we do to help facilitate and provide these outdoor  opportunities? How do we maximize the learning potential of our outdoor spaces?

The quality of the outdoor experiences we give our students depends on how we optimize our outdoor spaces. There are many ways we can enhance our spaces for a better outdoor learning experience. Using different sized spaces for different activities provides the flexibility needed to tailor the lesson and experiences to your student’s needs. Using portable equipment also helps in  maximizing the flexibility of your outdoor space. Explore if it is viable to have use of communal and public spaces. Incorporating children’s ideas in the use of outdoor spaces empowers them and creates interest in the lessons you want to teach. It is also important to set up the spaces considering the different ability and needs of the children.

The outdoors presents opportunities for freedom, adventure, risk taking, creativity and imagination. Outdoor settings allow children to learn new concepts and skills through first hand experience. In outdoor spaces we need to try and promote children’s autonomy and choice. We can promote this autonomy considering open ended activities, materials, and the set up of the space. Educators can observe student’s interest and ideas and support the children in how they  express them. Children’s conceptual knowledge and skills can also be developed outdoors.  Considering student’s prior knowledge, skills, and interests, and the intended learning goals, planning for activities, spaces, and resources to support learning, and facilitating learning through  intentional questioning and modeling will help develop the skills and knowledge the students need.  When maximizing our outdoor space for additional learning opportunities we need to ensure the  safety of our space. Risks pose challenges ans uncertainties, but are an essential part of growth  and learning. The goal is not to remove all risk but to manage them by considering the many  hazards. Risks and potential hazards can be systemically managed and is a crucial component of outdoor learning spaces. Consideration needs to be taken for who will be present and their roles during outdoor explorations. Making sure the environment where the outdoor activity is being  conducted is free of hazards is of great importance. The equipment used for the activity needs to ensure the children’s safety, well being, and learning. The process of the outdoor activity needs to be consider, preparation and the steps to be taken for conducting the outdoor activity need to be followed in order to maximize the learning potential of the activity.
