Early care and education providers work with diverse groups of students from all walks of life. Statistics show that 26% percent of children living in America will experience some sort of trauma in their life before the age of four. This course introduces the concept of trauma in the lives of young children and focuses on ways to incorporate trauma-informed practices into the environment and interactions with children.
This is an introductory course to positive guidance, a philosophy and strategy for guiding children’s behaviors and learning experiences. The course will explore the elements of child development that influence positive guidance strategies and some basic implementation practices for use in the child care setting. The course will also discuss the importance of working with families to establish consistent positive guidance practices at school and at home.
This course will provide an understanding of childhood stress and will give information, activity ideas, and tools for easing children’s anxieties and worries in the classroom. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to define various sources of stress, identify symptoms, and various methods to help children cope.

When those who work with young children begin to understand temperament, and differentiate between typical behaviors expected of children at certain developmental level versus behaviors that may require more focused interventions, the overall program quality is strengthened through this important knowledge and valuable practice.
